Hello everyone,
The VIN plate and the engine plate on my 280 SE coupe 3.5 (built in '69 I believe) have been lost over the years and I need to get new ones from DaimlerCrysler. They in turn need pictures of the stamped numbers on the frame and the engine.
For the life of me I can't find where the numbers are stamped on the frame. From what I read on the internet, apparently they should be somewhere on the front right hand chassis member but I just can't find them. The chassis appears 100% original and not to have ever been repaired, so it should still be wherever the factory originally stamped it. The car has though has had at least two additional coats of paint over the years so it may be hidden somewhere under the paint.
I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me EXACTLY where the chassis number should be stamped (it's right hand drive by the way so I don't know if that makes a difference) so I can strip the paint and see what I can find.
Also an indication of where the engine number should be would be gratefully received.

See the the two plaques on top of the (radiator) frame next to the hood hinge. These two are what you are looking for.

well, I have a 220SE but it should be similar. If I stand in front of the car and see the engine, then I can find the frame number on the left hand under the air intake and air filter.
Just because I have a straight six, I can't tell you exactly where you can find the right place for the number on a V8 engine, sorry!.
But just wait a while, we have lots of V8 specialists here.
