your question sound familiar, as I had the same impression when I bought my pagode. only two gear changes.

it seems that the car "takes off" in second gear when you only slightly accelerate. When I start on steeper uphill street OR in a tight turn OR with a kickdown, the first gear wakes up, and then I have three gear changes. The first gear seems to be veerrryyy short.

Soorry for the French, but I tried at least
When the selector is on 4, you will have 4 speeds available. But when you drive off in a regular way, you may not notice that you drive off in the second gear to start with. Under the gas pedal/throttle, there is a switch. If you stand still (e.g. at a traffic light), and suddenly push down the throttle, you will actuate the swtch, and the first gear will be used. You should notice the differene, since you will feel 3 times a push in your back as the gearbox changes gears. Also, when driving lets say 60-70 in 4th gear, when you push the throttle all down, the gear will kik back into third, inreasing the accelleration.

If you select 2 on the handle, it will only have 2 gears available. In mountains for example, it an be good to selectr 3rd gear, to break on the engine.

May be this explains what I tried to tell ?

I don't know what the others answerd as my my french is quite poor. :-/
One possibility for that behavior could be that the automatic transmisson starts already in 2nd gear and shifts twice to be in 4th. But I am not sure if your gearbox is constructed that way. You can test it, if you use kickdown from the start, the transmission should shift down in 1st gear, then you should recognize 3 shifts to 4th gear.
Someone may please correct me when I'm wrong.

Hello dear friend from Holland.

I haven't really understood your answer. When I put the gear selector (in my car, close to the driving weel) on the "4" level and I start to drive, I only feel 2 changes of speeds. That's why I think that my automatic gearbox has pehaps a problem. I have got a 350 SE W116 too, with (I'm sure) a 3 speeds gearbox. When I'm driving this car, I feel 2 changes too.

So my question is : How many changes can you normally count when you drive a Mercedes 111 with the selector at the "4" position ?

Salut toi
Normalement ils changent très doucement entre la première et la duexième. Moi j'ai une W108 et il me pris assez de temps à réaliser le changement des vitesses parce qu'il changent beaucoup plus tôt que les boîtes automatiques modernes.
